Happy campers go home full of hope from #XSFIT2016 #FutureReadyAs FIT 2016 comes to a close, participants share what their takeaways are from the three-day conference. A few teachers emphasize the importance of teaching students to be responsible in using technology. Technology highlights the crucial role of teachers as formators even in the virtual world. Also, some teachers note the need for educators to embrace technology and to keep themselves up to date with current trends in technology to build and strengthen authentic connections with 21st century learners.
Participants also get to showcase their talents as they sing and dance to the beat of their class cheers. The energy was still high during the closing program, and we at FIT hope that participants will be in high spirits too as they share their insights and apply what they have learned in helping their schools and communities be #FutureReady! |
Personal Project |
Something new in this year's conference is for participants to create their Personal Project, where they get to plan on how they would concretely apply what they have learned in the conference.
Precious Daluz, a student of Philippine Normal University, shared her personal project of using her Art Blog as platform to discuss current educational issues that affect students like her. An editorial cartoonist and freelance artist herself, Precious aims to use her talent in art and what she learned in XSFIT 2016 to raise awareness and promote discussions to help improve the state of education in the country. You can check her art blog at chalk-nut.tumblr.com. |
Breakout Session 4
Level Up through iOS App Development
Ms. Joiada Guides Do you want to create your own iOS app? Yes your own iOS app! In this session, participants were guided to a step-by-step process on how to start creating their very own app using Xcode. An app that makes your own app? (Feels like Inception, eh?) |
ICT Integration in the Classroom: CSDB Experience It's easy to think that public schools are having a hard time keeping up with using technology in the classroom but in this session, you might prove it wrong. A few teachers from the Division of City Schools, Batac, Ilocos Norte shared how they integrate ICT in schools where Internet connection were unavailable. Ms. Judith Salut discussed about RACHEL which stands for Remote Area Community Hotspots for Education and Learning. Through RACHEL, online resources were made available in offline communities. She also discussed how these resources helped promote computer literacy and widen their experience with learning. |
Art in the Classroom
Ms. Maria Carmela R. Angeles Creating "thinkquirers" — building up students with zest for curiosity and critical inquiry — is probably one of the goals of schools with International Baccalaureate (IB) program. When it comes to Art, Ms. Angeles noted that it is important for students to not only become "consumers of the arts" but also "creators of the arts", which help them create and recreate their own cultural context and ultimately, build them up to become global citizens. |
Breakout Session 3
Thinking through Art in the Classroom Ms. Josemarie Salvador The speaker asked the participants what images are. Then she goes on by saying that images includes photographs, illustrations, drawings, maps, diagrams, advertisements and other forms of media that we see. The session acquainted participants with what Visual Literacy in the classroom is and how can they create presentations that make use of the elements of art using design thinking as a method. |
Every teacher a designer: redesigning teaching through ICT Mr. Galvin Ngo and Mrs. Criselda Tanjutco-Ngo The speakers started the session with posing the question, "What are your current classroom problems?" Participants wrote their answers on the board and the speakers used that as a springboard for discussion. The speakers argued that using technology inside the classroom is inevitable, they wanted to teach the participants in learning how to effectively use technology to help their students learn better. This session provoked participants to think of ways how they can redesign teaching, with the use of ICT, to promote better learning. |
Media Literacy Education in Advertisement Ms. Melody Mateo With the quick rise of technology in our day and age, different forms of media are easily available and accessible even to our students, no matter the age. This is the main reason why teachers have a need to know how to properly educate the students with how to interpret the different types of media that they receive. The speaker focused on different concepts and principles in advertising and how we can use them to teach our students to be Media Literate so they can evaluate them through moral and Christian perspectives. |
Visible Thinking Ms. Jessica Sucgang Visible Thinking strategies have been gaining attention in the field of education because more and more teachers are veering away from the traditional classroom. The session focused on how teachers can make learning more meaningful to students. Teachers want to make sure that learning is not left to chance, which is why, we have the art of Visible Thinking. We make our students see how they think through several classroom activities that aim to make learning a more conscious effort. |
I Don't Mind Being GREEN minded! Ms. AJ Belason and Ms. Katrina Tomo The facilitators of the session started with a typical classroom set-up. They both simulated how they would teach how to use the Green Screen application to their students inside a classroom. Green Screen is a technology that has been used by the media using high-technology devices and a studio where you can actually shoot with a green screen. But with the rise of technological advances, the concept of the Green Screen is now readily available to anyone who has a device and a green background. |
Lightning Talks: Faculty Edition
Mr. Jim Tuscano
Kids are known for their creativity. Mr. Tuscano shared how his students in CLE used IPAD applications in order to create more creative outputs. He shared that his students used iMovie to create a video about the Ten Commandments. He discusses that his students became instant directors, aiming for perfection while making their project. Another application that he makes mention is the Book Creator. Book creator allows users to make their own ebook. He used this in class after their interaction with a community of people who are physically challenged. He said that he wanted to help his students preserve their experiences and what better way to do this but to document and journal about it. The level of engagement was high and the students learned to use copyright free images. It was an awesome way to engage students and provide them with authentic assessments. Because of this, Mr. Tuscano was able to develop the 5D's framework. This framework, was recently recognized and shared by an international outfit. He ends his speech by saying that "We open our minds so that we can help our students become successful even at their young age." |
Mr. Mark Plaza
Mr. Plaza shared his experiences in Mindanao. He says that although Mindanao has been widely published as a very dangerous place in our country, that is not all that they have to offer. He shares that he is with a group of teachers that help other teachers in Lanao to develop better lesson plans. He argues that even though they do not have the same technology that we have, the students and teachers are still very engaged in their learning. Mr. Plaza then shares that what makes their teachers and students like this is that apart from the negative conditions they are subjected to, they are also hungry for learning, they are innovative and show a high level of love of learning. He argues that in order to be innovative, students and teachers do not need to have very expensive technology, all they need are the tools freely available for us, such as Google Apps. |
Ms. Edmarie Querubin
She starts her talk with saying that 92% of children use the internet nowadays. She reaffirms that technology is now part of the world we live in, that's why we should use technology to our advantage. She makes mention of Learning Management System (LMS) like Edmodo, Moodle, and Google Classroom. She askdd her students why are they on social media and the students said that they want to connect through social media. We teachers most of the time do not see what the students want to tell us. That is why she uses these LMS to be a homeroom page for us to connect with our students. She only has one rule for her students, they can post anything on the page but they should never forget to respect each other. Through social media, she says, we are able to see the students interests and what they want to tell you. She argues that technology should be used as an outlet for students to express themselves so that we, as teachers, get to know our students better. We would now ask ourselves "How have we affected our students through the use of technology?" |
Day 3 starts with an energetic performance from Dance X, the high school dance group of Xavier School. The Dance X showcased their talents and helped start the day right. The very lively performance garnered applause from the participants of the FIT2016. Great Job Dance X!

Indeed, Zeteo VR makes learning more interactive and more fun for any student. |
Click Click!
The speaker introduced the use of an i-clicker. It's a small white clicker that can be used for motivation, for discussion and even for closure. But the speaker reminds the participants that the clicker is just a tool. The teacher is still the craftsman of learning. Participants are reminded that the teacher is irreplaceable, but this tool helps you with some teacher clerical work. One practice that a teacher finds very taxing is recording the correct answer of students, with this clicker, you save time and have results right away! |
